What is Emergency Management?

The goal of Emergency Management is simple: to save lives, protect property, and build resilience.

 Emergency Management is the coordinated effort to prepare for, respond to, recover from, and reduce the impact of disasters. It is a partnership between local officials, first responders, state and federal agencies, and the community. 

What is an emergency?

An emergency is any unexpected event that threatens life, property, or the environment and requires

Natural disasters such as hurricanes, tornadoes, and floods.

Man-made incidents like hazardous material spills or accidents.

Public safety concerns including fires, health emergencies, and community crises.

THE FOUR STAGES OF EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT

Mitigation

Reducing future risks by identifying hazards and strengthening safety measures.

Example: Floodplain management, building codes, storm sirens.

PREPAREDNESS

 Planning ahead through training, exercises, and readiness programs.

Example: Evacuation drills, emergency kits, community training.

RESPONSE

 Taking immediate action to protect life and property during an emergency.

Example: Deploying first responders, opening shelters, issuing warnings.

Recovery

 Helping the community rebuild and return to normal after a disaster.

Example: Restoring utilities, providing relief aid, long-term recovery plans.
