SEVERE WEATHER

Living in Seminole County means enjoying the beauty of South Georgia, but it also means being prepared for the severe weather that can strike our area. Hurricanes, tornadoes, flooding, and extreme heat are just a few of the hazards our community may face. Preparing ahead of time can make all the difference when emergencies happen.

Common Severe Weather Threats in Seminole County:

  • Hurricanes & Tropical Storms – Heavy rain, high winds, and flooding can cause dangerous conditions.
  • Tornadoes & Severe Thunderstorms – Sudden storms can produce damaging winds and hail.
  • Flooding – Low-lying areas are at risk during periods of heavy rain or storm surge.
  • Extreme Heat – Prolonged high temperatures can be dangerous, especially for children, elderly, and outdoor workers. 

Steps to Prepare

✔ Build an Emergency Kit – Include food, water, medications, flashlights, batteries, and important documents.
✔ Make a Family Plan – Know where to go, who to call, and how to reconnect if separated.
✔ Stay Informed – Sign up for Hyper-Reach and CodeRED alerts, follow Seminole County EMA on social media, and monitor local news.
✔ Protect Your Home – Secure outdoor items, trim trees, and prepare for possible power outages.
✔ Plan for Special Needs – Consider elderly family members, children, pets, and those with medical needs. 

During Severe Weather

  • Follow official alerts and instructions.
  • Take shelter immediately when advised.
  • Avoid flooded roadways — Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
  • Stay off the roads unless absolutely necessary.

After the Storm

  •  Stay informed about recovery updates.
  • Avoid downed power lines and report hazards.
  • Check on neighbors, especially those who may need extra help.
